Ming Wang was founded in 2000 and was named after its creator and designer, Ming Wang. Ming has been designing ageless garments since 1986 and over time, found a niche within the knitwear market that had not yet been tended to. In 1978, Ming and her husband Eddie moved from Taiwan to the United States, to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) in New York City. While Eddie attended F.I.T. and worked in a grocery store, Ming took care of their son during the day and attended F.I.T. at night. At the time, there was a private contracting company that taught people how to use hand knit machines at home and paid their employees by the piece. This was the perfect opportunity for Ming, who needed a work-at-home job in order to take care of their son. Ming began producing enough pieces where her income became significantly higher than that of her husband. A natural businessman, Eddie’s keen eye told him to quit his job at the grocery store, and he learned to knit as well. Within a couple of months, Eddie and Ming observed an overwhelming positive response to the hand-knit collection they were producing. This success allowed them to rent a space in Long Island City, NY as their first production facility, but soon after, relocated to Miami, Florida where they launched their first high-end fashion line, Toula, in 1986. Toula was created with the intent of bringing a high-end knitwear suiting collection to the market with a classic appeal that was both flattering and wearable. With the success of Toula under their belt, Ming wanted to create an additional knitwear collection that would be a more wearable and affordable alternative to Toula for the modern, “on-the-go” woman. The Ming Wang collection was born with the goal of employing the already established knitwear forte of the Toula brand, in order to establish a new brand that would not compromise Ming’s initial commitment to timelessness. Today, Ming Wang is firmly established in the United States and not only sold nationwide in highly reputable fashion boutiques and highly regarded retailers such as Nordstrom, Von Maur, and Dillard’s, but also continues to establish and evolve its global presence with international expansion in the Middle East and Asia. |
